The Mumbai traffic police will soon get hydraulic towing cranes to ensure that towing of vehicles is carried out smoothly without adding to the traffic and also ensuring that vehicles are not damaged in the process. This is one of the measures the Mumbai police plans to take to ensure that they can reduce traffic congestion, said Mumbai Police chief Datta Padsalgikar at the Indian Merchants Chamber. Padsalgikar said, “There are several measures we are planning to help reduce traffic. Currently, if there is a vehicle parked illegally that is causing traffic congestion and a towing vehicle is called, it leads to further traffic. Hence we want to use hydraulic cranes that will ensure the process is carried out smoothly and does not add to the traffic.” Mentioning that handling the traffic of nearly 31 lakh vehicles in a city with a space of 438 sq km was a big challenge, he added, “Last month, we appealed to people of the city to volunteer in easing the traffic in small ways like helping people cross the road. Within a matter of days nearly 3,000 people volunteered, which is a very healthy sign.”
