Raising hopes of a good start to August, the Met department has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of the city on Wednesday.
After a weak performance of the south-west monsoon in June and July,August is the only core monsoon month left to cover up the deficit. Between June 1 and July 31,the island city accumulated a rain deficit of 57 per cent and the suburbs have recorded a deficit of 31 per cent.
Between 8.30 am on Sunday and 5.30 pm on Tuesday, the city received light to moderate rain with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)s Santacruz weather station, indicative of rain in the suburbs, recording 31.9 mm of rain in that period while Colaba weather station, indicative of the island city, recorded 22.5 mm.
However, weather officials have predicted heavy spells of rain on Wednesday. For the last three to four days, the offshore trough was feeble and there was a general lull. But now, wind speeds have increased and there has been an increase in monsoon activity, said V K Rajeev, director, weather forecast,IMD.

Maximum temperatures fell on Tuesday with the island city recording 28.60,down from 310 the previous day while the suburbs recorded 29.60 down from 310.
Wednesday also has a high tide of 4.52 metres at 11.48 am which is crucial because if a day with a tide of more than 4.5 metres corresponds with heavy rainfall,it creates acute flooding problems in the city.
