WOMEN begging their husbands to stay away from alcohol, a group of men drinking liquor, people producing hooch, and a group of men carrying a dead body to the cremation ground. The scenes, evoking memories of the hooch tragedy in June that shook the city and claimed 104 lives within a week, are recreated around an 11-foot Ganesh idol by a Ganesh mandal in Malad. The idea is to create awareness against liquor.

In June, 104 people lost their lives in a week at Malwani. Ganesh mandals carry some social message or the other or events that have captured public imagination at the pandals set up during the 10-day festival in the city.

The residents of Laxmi Nagar had consumed spurious alcohol that had methanol instead of ethanol. For the last 25 years, the mandal has been using skits to spread social messages. In 2014, the 100-plus volunteers had recreated scenes from the Andheri Lotus Business Park fire and Mantralaya fire.

In July 2014, a major blaze in Lotus Business Park killed a fireman and injured over 20 firemen. The Mantralaya fire in 2012 destroyed sensitive documents. “We try and create themes around current happenings and major events that impacted the city in a big way. We created themes around organ donation and child labour earlier,” Sagar added.

The mandal is also running awareness programmes on saving water, keeping dengue at bay, and the swachchata abhiyan.
