Extortion bid: Shiv Sainik,2 aides held

The LT Marg police on Wednesday arrested three persons,including a Shiv Sena shakha pramukh from South Mumbai,for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 1,000 from a building contractor near the Zaveri Bazaar area.

The LT Marg police on Wednesday arrested three persons,including a Shiv Sena shakha pramukh from South Mumbai,for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 1,000 from a building contractor near the Zaveri Bazaar area.

According to the police,the arrested trio has been identified as Shiv Sena shakha pramukh of the Jambul Wadi area,Santosh Shinde (35),and his associates,Santosh Gharat and Vinod Mishra. Investigators said the victim,Mohammad Ayub Qureshi,who is a registered MHADA contractor,has a building repair project underway in Jambul Wadi.

“On Wednesday,when Qureshi was returning from the site,he was accosted by the trio,who then asked for Rs 1,000 from him for the party fund. When Qureshi refused,the three men assaulted him,” said inspector Srikant Desai from the LT Marg police station. Qureshi went to GT Hospital and later lodged a complaint. The trio was arrested on Wednesday evening,but released on bail on Thursday.
