Cops hunt for three burglars who made away with Rs 13 lakh

“The building does not have any CCTV camera or security guard,” said Shridhar Hanchate, Senior Police Inspector, Vikhroli police station.

The Vikhroli police and the crime branch are on the lookout for three unknown persons who stole valuables worth Rs 13 lakh from three apartments in the same building early Saturday. Less than 100 metre away from the Vikhroli police station are these houses — in the B wing of building number 165 — where these burglary cases took place.

“The building does not have any CCTV camera or security guard,” said Shridhar Hanchate, Senior Police Inspector, Vikhroli police station.

The accused, now absconding, first latched the neighbours’ flats from outside before striking in those homes which were locked from outside, an indication that the occupants were away. The police said gold worth Rs 11 lakh and Rs 2 lakh in cash was stolen on June 4 between 2 am and 4 am.

“One house on the first floor, belonging to Milind Dhuri (34), lost Rs 70,000 in cash and gold worth Rs 5.4 lakh; the other two apartments were on the second floor of the four-storey building,” said an investigator.

Last month, there was a series of house break-ins in the eastern suburbs. On May 8 night, 15 homes were burgled in Kanjurmarg, and few days later, 15 other homes were broken into in Bhandup.

“The Bhandup police made four arrests in that matter, but those cases and the Vikhroli break-ins are not connected. The accused left two large bricks with a handkerchief below it indicating the work of a notorious gang from Kalyan’s Ambivali area,” said a senior Mumbai Police Crime Branch officer with Unit VII, who is also probing into the robberies.

Hanchate said two neighbours saw the men run into the nearby forest from their windows. “We have no other lead in the matter. The thefts are still under investigation,” Hanchate added.
