Rumour of a bomb in a school bag sent police into a tizzy in Bathinda district’s Rama Mandi town on Friday morning, forcing schools to shut for the day. Police, however, did not find anything objectionable after a thorough checking.

The RMM DAV Public School was evacuated after the rumour that a woman had put some explosive substance in the bag of one of the students. Soon, the rumour spread through social media to other schools and were also forced to close for the day after parents reached schools to take their children home.

It all started when a woman in a long veil had come to drop her child in the school. In the absence of a security guard, the woman reached straight to a classroom to drop her child.  But her veil made a teacher suspicious. Police was informed immediately and on inquiring it was found that woman was living in a nearby Rager Basti and it was a tradition in her community to sport a veil while going outside the house.

“The matter had been sorted out within few minutes and we had even introduced the woman to the principal. Even her child was also called so that he could recongize his mother,” said Manjit Singh, assistant sub-inspector.
