The Uttar Pradesh police will send a team to Gujarat to interrogate Karthik alias Raju Dulalchand Haldar, who was arrested on Monday for his alleged involvement in the killing of three witnesses and four attempts to murder witnesses in the rape cases lodged against self-styled godman Asaram and his son Narayan Sai.
Karthik, a native of West Bengal, was arrested in Chhattisgarh in a joint operation by the Gujarat ATS and Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch UP IG, Law and Order, Bhagwan Swaroop said the Gujarat Police have conveyed them that Karthik has confessed about his involvement in the murders of Akhil Kumar Gupta and Kripal Singh in UP last year.
The IG added that a team of the UP Police would be sent to Gujarat for interrogation as well as collection of details about another witness, Rahul Sachan, who went missing from Lucknow on November 26 last year.
Kripal Singh was shot at on July 10 last year while returning home and died next day in a hospital in Bareilly. The Shahjahanpur police had later arrested Narayan Pandey alias Pushpendra Pandey, an alleged follower of Asaram, on charges of murder conspiracy.
Investigating officer of the case and SHO of Shahjahanpur’s Sadar Bazaar police station, K K Verma said Pandey is currently lodged in jail and a chargesheet has been filed against him.
Gupta too was shot dead while on his way home in Nai Mandi police station area in Muzaffarnagar on January 11 last year. Akhil had worked as a cook and personal aide of Asaram.
While the police was yet to make any arrest, the Uttar Pradesh government had recommended a CBI probe into the case in July last year. The agency is yet to take over the probe.
Akhil’s wife Varsha, who is also a witness in the same case, said three policemen have been removed from police security provided to them.
According to police, one of the police gunners who was deployed in Rahul Sachan’s security, said on the day he went missing, Rahul had taken a bus from Qaiserbagh bus station and asked him to leave, telling that he would return after few days. Rahul is yet to be traced since then and his cellphone was found to be switched off.
The gunner later informed that Thakurganj police station about him being missing and a kidnapping case was registered.
Station Officer, Thakurganj police station, Samar Bahadur Yadav said so far they are yet to get any leads in the Rahul missing case.
A police team was sent to Haryana and Kanpur in search of him but nothing was found, he added.
