Uttar Pradesh: Dalit woman shot dead over land dispute, neighbour booked

A 60-year-old Dalit woman was shot dead on Saturday morning by her neighbour in her village over a land dispute in Kurawali police station area of Mainpuri district. The incident occurred when the victim, Sarla Devi, was returning home after working in the field.

The deceased’s son Rahul got an FIR registered against neighbour Poonam and her husband Pintu Tomar, both of whom belong to the Thakur community. Police personnel have been deployed in the village, which is dominated by the Thakur community. No arrests have been made yet.

Kurawali Circle Officer Shamsher Singh said that Poonam and Sarla had entered into a verbal altercation at the field around 10 am. Pintu Tomar too was reportedly present there. But following intervention by locals, the matter was settled, he added.

“A few minutes later, Poonam and Pintu returned to the field. Pintu reportedly handed Poonam a country-made pistol which she fired at Sarla,” the CO said. While the couple escaped, bystanders rushed the victim to the hospital where doctors declared her brought dead on arrival, Singh added.

Sarla’s husband Ramesh Chand lives in Mumbai, while she had been staying in Mainpuri with her three children.
