BSP chief Mayawati Wednesday said that her party will not have any alliance or understanding with any party in the Assembly elections in any state, including Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Her remarks come a day after two BSP MLAs voted for Congress’s Harish Rawat in a crucial floor test in Uttarakhand Assembly to regain his position as chief minister.

Talking to reporters in Delhi and in a subsequent party statement on the matter, Mayawati said BSP will contest the coming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab “alone” and “on its own”.

She said BSP is not just a political party but also “a social movement”, and it contests elections to take its mission forward, “not for any momentary benefits or victory or loss”. She said this is the reason why her party is contesting elections without any alliance even in the states where it does not have a strong organisation.

Mayawati said her party supported Congress in Uttarakhand “only with the intent to weaken the communal forces”. She said contesting elections of Lok Sabha or Assembly in alliance is different from supporting a “non-communal party” in forming the government after the elections.

Mayawati said BSP, since its inception, has been contesting elections on its own and one or two electoral alliances it made in states caused more loss than benefit to the party. She said while BSP’s votes were transferred to its ally, the people of the alliance partner did not vote for the BSP because of their “casteist mentality”.
