A trader in Mau was shot dead by unidentified people in Chiraiyakot Bazar town Tuesday morning, leading to a protest by local businessmen who indulged in arson and damaged public property.
Vinod Seth (35), who ran an agency of Hero Honda two-wheelers, was fired at indiscriminately by four men on two motorcycles. Seth was driving his car to his shop when he was attacked, police said, adding that he was rushed to Azamgarh for treatment but succumbed on way.
Hundreds of people, led by local traders’ union, blocked roads in protest and even damaged a UPSRTC bus before setting it on fire. Protesters also ransacked a police booth and hurled stones at Chiraiyakot police station, officers said. Police had to resort to lathicharge and lob teargas shells to disperse the mob. The situation was brought under control by afternoon.
The traders alleged that Seth had earlier received threats and was subsequently granted security, which, however, was withdrawn a few days ago. Police, on the other hand, said the victim still had security cover though the officers deployed for the purpose had stayed back at his home on Tuesday.
DM Vaibhav Srivastava said he has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the issue of security cover granted to Seth. Police have registered an FIR of murder against unidentified people.
