A 30-year-old man allegedly died after being assaulted in custody at Hazrat Nagar Gadi police station of Moradabad on Friday. The district’s senior superintendent of police (SSP) ordered for an FIR to be lodged against 9 policemen including the station house officer (SHO). The youth’s relatives allegedly blocked roads and pelted stones at the police station, due to which a large number of personnel were deployed in the village.
Rafi-Ul-Hassan (30), son of retired police officer Mehraz-Ul-Hassan from Madhan village, was detained by police on Thursday based on information that he had been involved in a bike theft. His relatives told SSP Moradabad Nitin Tiwari that the police initially said they were detaining him for questioning, but Rafi didn’t return home till midnight. When they went to the police station, they were not allowed to meet him.
“The kin told us that they were informed by police that their son is ill and is being taken to a nearby community health centre in Bilari. They alleged that when they reached the hospital, they found him dead,” said SSP Tiwari.
The agitating mob calmed down after the SSP ordered an FIR against SHO Pravesh Kumar and eight other policemen. Rafi’s body was sent for post-mortem on Friday night. “There are signs of assault on the body, but we have come to know that he had some medical issues as well. Things will be clear after the autopsy,” said the SSP.
