MUZAFFARNAGAR police Friday recovered a country-made pistol allegedly used in the murder of Akhil Kumar Gupta, a prime witness in the rape case against self-styled jailed godman Asaram Bapu. Akhil was shot dead in Nai Mandi police station area of Muzaffarnagar on January 11 last year.
The recovery was made following information of a co-accused in the murder case, Neeraj, who was remanded to police custody for 12 hours.

Neeraj also showed the house to the police, which was provided to the alleged killer — Karthik Haldar — to stay on rent before he allegedly executed the murder.

“We recovered a .12 bore country-made pistol from thickets close to Delhi-Muzaffarnagar highway. We also saw the house taken on rent by Neeraj near Shiv temple at Ansari Road in Nai Mandi area for the killer who stayed there for about one month before Akhil was murdered,” said Station Officer, Nai Mandi, Rojan Tyagi, who is also investigating officer (IO) in the murder case.

“Six persons were found involved in Akhil’s murder. Neeraj and prime accused Karthik Haldar have been arrested. Four others are still on run. Neeraj told the police that he had provided the pistol to Karthik to kill Akhil,” said the SO.

Neeraj, who belongs to Muzaffarnagar, had been on the run since after the arrest of Karthik by Ahemdabad police. He was arrested on July 17 by Saharanpur police on charges of stealing cows and carrying a knife. During verification of his identity, police found Neeraj was wanted by Muzaffarnagar police in the murder case of Akhil. Saharanpur police informed Muzaffarnagar police about his arrest later.
