A fight broke out between two groups of students over playing at a ground outside the Chanakya hostel of Banaras Hindu University in which over half-a-dozen students suffered injuries, officials said Monday.

The clash took place Sunday when some students of Arts faculty, who were playing at a ground outside the Chanakya hostel, were asked by Law Faculty students, who reside there, not to disturb them, said BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh.

Singh claimed this led to an argument and a minor clash, but no one was injured in the incident. He said the university has not taken any action in the matter.

However, Prof Devenkra Kumar Sharma, dean of Faculty of Law, claimed that more than 30 people had entered the Chanakya hostel Sunday morning and beat up the law students after they protested against the noise outside. He said eight to 10 law students suffered injuries.

Sharma said he has forwarded a complaint to the police against a few identified and other unidentified students of Arts, who allegedly assaulted the law students.

Lanka station officer Sanjiv Mishra said he had received the complaint but it doesn’t have any complainant’s name. “I told the students and the dean that an FIR cannot be registered without the name of a complainant. They said they will submit another application but they are yet to do that,” he said.
