CONGRESS OFFICE-BEARERS on Tuesday allegedly objected to the idea of promoting a “Brahmin face” as the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the 2017 Assembly polls in UP in a meeting with poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s team in Lucknow.

Kishor’s team on Tuesday began its survey on nine assembly seats in Lucknow district by meeting the party’s district and city units. Among the nine seats, while four fall under the purview of the district unit, the rest come under the city committee.

Sources said when asked about the local issues and caste equations in each seat, vice-president Neeraj Saini and treasurer Santosh Maurya of the district unit objected to the idea of promoting a “Brahmin face” or a “Brahmin CM face”. They reportedly claimed this would only harm the party.

“Some office-bearers objected to the talks of promoting a Brahmin face for the polls and maintained that Congress should be neutral to all castes. The objection mainly came from OBC office-bearers,” said a senior leader, who was part of the meeting.

On the other hand, most city unit office-bearers objected to the practice of giving ticket to outsiders in the name of winnability. “The team asked for suggestions on local issues per assembly constituency and also caste combinations. Another round of meetings will take place on Wednesday,” said Bodh Lal Shukla, president of the city unit.

While 100 office-bearers participated in the city meeting, around 50 leaders attended the district committee meeting. Meetings with ward and block level heads will take place on Wednesday.
