HAVING BEEN repeatedly denied permission by the Akhilesh Yadav government from holding rallies in the state, a stout Asaduddin Owaisi, the Hyderabad MP and president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has announced yet another visit to Uttar Pradesh in what will be his bid to kickstart preparations for the 2017 assembly elections.

For his two-day tour to five districts in the first phase beginning April 23, Owaisi has chosen eastern UP as his destination where he will be visiting Muslim-dominated districts such as Azamgarh, Balrampur, Sidharth Nagar, Sant Kabir Nagar and Jaunpur. Party leaders said Owaisi would hold ‘indoor’ meetings with workers and those seeking tickets for the elections.

He, however, will not address any public meeting, which would have meant seeking permission from the district administration. The Samajwadi Party (SP) government had denied permission all through last year to the AIMIM leader who had submitted applications on several occasions.

Owaisi will arrive in Lucknow Saturday from where he will travel to Balrampur by road, stopping by to interact with party workers on the route. On the same day, he will inaugurate the party’s district offices in Balrampur, Sidharth Nagar and Sant Kabir Nagar.

As per his schedule, Owaisi will leave for Azamgarh later that night to meet with workers there. He will stay at the residence of party state president Shaukat Ali. On Sunday, Owaisi will visit Saraimeer where he will address workers at the Madarsa Islamiyah Arabia Baitul Uloom. He will later move to Jaunpur where he will inaugurate the party office before leaving for Varanasi airport.

Shaukat Ali explained that The Indian Express, after first allowing Owaisi to hold public meetings in Azamgarh, Allahabad and Agra had later withdrawn its permission. “The government strategically denied permission for 16 public meetings last year. These meetings were to be held in different districts including Allahabad, Azamgarh, Balrampur, Faizabad and Agra. Now, we will hold programmes in such a manner that we don’t require the the district administration’s permission,” Ali said. The only time Owaisi managed to address public meetings was during the bypolls recently with permission coming straight from the Election Commission.

Ali said that April onwards, Owaisi will be visiting at least two to three districts every month and hold indoor meetings with workers at the residence of state AIMIM leaders.

About the upcoming visit, he said Owaisi will aim to mobilise workers and take stock of organisational preparations for the Assembly elections in which the AIMIM wants to contest on maximum possible seats to emerge as an alternative to the ruling SP and the opposition BSP. He said leaders of both these parties have “exploited Muslim voters for their personal gains”. AIMIM claims to have active units in 66 districts of the state.
