Based on the recommendations of a five-member internal committee, the Executive Council of the Aligarh Muslim University on Saturday unanimously decided to hold elections to the AMU Students’ Union, Women’s College Students’ Union and for the students’ representation on the AMU Court, on October 8.

The decision was made at an emergency special meeting of the executive council presided over by university vice-chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah.

The varsity authorities had on Wednesday put off the elections, earlier scheduled for September 26, citing a “disturbing situation” due to the participation of expelled students and “criminals” canvassing inside the campus. The V-C, after facing massive protest by the students, later formed a five-member committee to find out if there is conducive atmosphere for elections on the campus, as claimed by the students.

“The committee submitted its report on whose basis we have finally declared elections on October 8. The V-C has appointed Prof Iqbal Pervez and Dr Roohi Abida Ahmad as Chief Election Officers for conducting the elections,” said Rahat Abrar, Public Relation Officer, AMU.

The election process will begin on September 27 and nominations will be filed on September 29. Voting will be held on October 8 followed by counting on the same day, the university spokesperson said.

The executive council made it clear that any violation of the AMU Students’ Union (Conduct of Election) Regulations 2010, amended in 2012, will invite penalty of disqualification.

Earlier in the day, a group of AMU students took out a silent march to press their demand for holding student union elections as scheduled. The protesters, including the candidates contesting the polls, also staged a dharna outside the vice-chancellor’s residence. They have rejected the university’s proposal for holding elections at a later date.

“We have been denied our democratic right on the ground that external elements have entered the campus and could vitiate peace,” a spokesman of the protesting students said. “The entire responsibility of screening those who enter the campus lies with the university and district authorities. Why should we pay the price if the authorities have not been able to shoulder their responsibility?” he asked. with pti
