The Uttar Pradesh government Wednesday cleared the proposal for constructing a “bicycle highway” connecting Taj Mahal in Agra to Lion safari in Etawah. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The 197-km “bicycle highway” is a dream project of Akhilesh, which he had announced during the first-ever UP Bird festival in Agra in December last year. While the distance between Agra and Etawah is about 155 km, the “bicycle highway” will take several detours covering several places of historical and tourism importance in the two cities.

The cabinet also cleared a proposal of about Rs 346 crore for construction of international cricket stadium in Akhilesh’s native village Saifai, also in Etawah.

In another major decision, the cabinet cleared a proposal to auction the “VIP” registration numbers for vehicles. So far, there was a fee set for “attractive and significant” numbers, which were issued on first come first serve basis through online registration.

However, with a motive to raise more revenue, the government approved the auction system already adopted by states like Haryana and Punjab.

Under the new system, the auction will be open for seven days after the notification of a new series of numbers. If it fails to attract at least three bidders, the auction will be extended for seven more days.

The cabinet also cleared a proposal to convert the existing bus station in Kaisarbagh area of Lucknow into a state-of-the-art station with government funds. The cabinet approved the expected expenditure of about Rs 10 crore for turning the existing bus stand into a model one and also cleared about Rs 3 crore for initial upgradation works.

Rs 23 crore was also cleared for construction of a forensic lab in Bareilly.

Meanwhile, sources informed that a proposal to amend the rules for registration of Hindu marriages was also supposed to be taken up by the cabinet. The proposal, however, was withdrawn at the last moment as it needs some more amendments.
