IN A continuance of celebrations after the landmark Supreme Court judgment on Singur land acquisition issue, the Trinamool Congress government has decided to commemorate Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s victorious struggle by establishing an Eco Park in Singur.
This will be the second Eco Park in the state after the one in New Town.
According to officials, the Singur Eco Park will be spread across 27,000 square feet at Baghdanga-Chnamore gram panchayat area.
The Kathkunti canal is proposed to be developed as a tourist attraction, officials said, adding that the main tourist attraction would be “a landmark for the movement against oppression of the Left government against peasants”.

Officials added that apart from tourism, the Eco Park would also include other facilities such as Krishibazar and health centres.
While the work to set up the park had already started in January with the government employing people under MGNREGA, officials said the work was now taking place at a breakneck speed.
“The park would have an estimated cost of Rs 84 lakh. Various types of plants, including those of medicinal value will be grown here. There will be a separate area demarcated only for children,” the official added.
The project, touted as Mamata Banerjee’s dream project, will be inaugurated on September 29 when she visits Singur for administrative review meeting of Hooghly district.
The local panchayat would look after the maintenance of the park.
Adaitya Das, a senior official of the panchayat, said, “There are also plans to set up cottages in the park, like those in New Town so it can be a tourist attraction.”
