Two Trinamool Congress workers killed in Murshidabad

The deceased — Sheikh Iyar Ali (30) and Abdul Sheikh (55) — were having tea at a roadside stall around 9 am when the assailants reached the spot on two motorcycles, police said.

Two Trinamool Congress workers were shot dead Thursday morning allegedly by six unidentified motorcycle-borne men in Domkal area of Murshidabad.

The deceased — Sheikh Iyar Ali (30) and Abdul Sheikh (55) — were having tea at a roadside stall around 9 am when the assailants reached the spot on two motorcycles, police said. One of the men fired at Ali, hitting him on the chest, while Abdul received two bullet injuries on his neck, they added, following which the miscreants escaped.

Locals rushed the duo to Berhampore Medical College, where they were declared dead during treatment. “We are investigating and exploring all possibilities. No one has been arrested yet,” said a senior police officer.

The attack led to tension in the area, and the police deployed additional forces and Rapid Action Force (RAF) to prevent any untoward incident. All shops were closed for the day.
