Accusing the Trinamool Congress of trying to poach Opposition MLAs using force and threats, CPM state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra on Friday said the party was “systematically threatening and intimidating workers of Opposition parties.
Claiming that Trinamool was out to demolish the democratic set up of the state, he told mediapersons: “In its second term, Trinamool has come back with an intention to take over civic bodies and panchayats which they could not win through ballot.”
“This is horse trading… People’s mandate has been reduced to a farce. Elected members of the Opposition have been told that if they do not defect, their areas would see no funds for development projects,” he added. Mishra went on to cite the example of Left-controlled Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad, where, he alleged, the government had withheld funds, hampering welfare work.
He also alleged that the district magistrates and SPs were being used to facilitate defection. Mishra alleged that more than 180 Left workers had been killed by the Trinamool over the last five years.
State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury too echoed similar views. “All Congress-controlled civic bodies are being deprived of funds. Thus, developmental works have come to a halt. The DM of Murshidabad had been given a mission to bring the zila parishad under Trinamool’s control,” he alleged.
In the last week, several councillors from Left and Congress-controlled municipal bodies have joined TMC.
