Teacher booked for ‘kicking’ student in West Bengal

An FIR was lodged against Minati Saha (55), who teaches at the Central Modern School, on the basis of a complaint lodged by Pinkie Prasad, the student’s mother.

A school teacher was booked for allegedly kicking a Class III student in Dum Dum Cantonment Thursday.

An FIR was lodged against Minati Saha (55), who teaches at the Central Modern School, on the basis of a complaint lodged by Pinkie Prasad, the student’s mother.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Prasad said that when her son Priyanshu (8) returned from school on Wednesday, she asked him why his uniform was dirty, to which he replied that his teacher had kicked him. “He told me that she kicked him when he was looking for a pencil under his bench. When he did not respond to her instructions to get back to his seat, she hit him,” she said. Alleging that the teacher had hit her son with a ruler on a previous occasion as well, she said, “When I confronted the teacher and the school’s principal, they said no such thing had happened. The principal told me I could shift my son to another school once the session gets over.”

Corporal punishment is banned in Indian schools.

The incident triggered a protest outside the school’s gates by parents, some of whom alleged that their children too had been hit by teachers. Mahesh Kumar Singh, father of a KG student, said, “My son was once slapped by a teacher so hard that finger marks were visible on his right cheek. I ignored it the first time, but when it happened again I went to the principal who assured me that it won’t be repeated. When I came to know about this recent incident, I supported the student’s mother.”

The school principal, T Garg, said, “This is the first time I have come across such allegations. When I confronted the teacher, she denied having done such a thing. I have found Minati Saha to be extremely polite with students. However, we would like to solve this matter mutually.”

Saha was booked under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC. Denying the charges, Saha said, “I have no clue why the child is making false allegations against me.”

“We are probing the matter, a detailed inquiry will help us get to the truth,” said a police officer.
