A day after a doctor of Midnapore Medical College and Hospital lodged a complaint on a cartoon allegedly defaming Mamata Banerjee, police officials investigating the case said there was no evidence to suggest that the woman depicted in the cartoon is the Chief Minister. Nobody has been arrested yet.

Dr Bikram Saha had filed a complaint at Kotwali police station alleging that a person,Pallab Maitra, had tagged a cartoon in which Banerjee’s head was reported to have “vanished”,with the comment that “our CM has lost her head”.

West Midnapore SP Sunil Kumar Chakraborty said the cartoon did not resemble the Chief Minister. He said they have informed the CID which is investigating the matter. CID officials, however, said they had not received any request from the district police.

K Jayraman,CID(DIG),Operations, said: “I think if such a case has been lodged, then the district police will take action”.

Dr Saha has been on unauthorised leave for the last three years, following a complaint of medical negligence filed against him. He has been engaged in private practice in Midnapore.

In January last year,a four-member committee submitted a report to the state health department on the charges of medical negligence. Health department officials said departmental proceedings were on and no disciplinary action has been taken so far.
