Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday expressed inability to attend Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s Iftar party in New Delhi on Monday. The TMC chief, however, accepted the invitation and deputed her party MPs to attend the function.
“Thank you Sonia Gandhiji for your invitation to Iftar on Monday. My good wishes. As I am in Kolkata, Derek O’Brien will be in Delhi on our behalf,” Mamata said in a statement.
Sonia’s invite to Mamata to the Iftar came just a week before the monsoon session of parliament.
A section of state Congress leaders want an alliance with CPI(M) to take on Mamata-led Trinamoool Congress in next year’s Assembly poll.
Mamata, meanwhile, also accepted Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s invitation for an Iftar party, to be held in national capital Sunday
“Thanks @arvindkejriwal for Iftar invitation on Sun. Good wishes. As I am in Kol, my colleagues Derek & Sukhendu will be there,” Mamata tweeted.

“@MamataOfficial Thank u Mamta Di. I wish u cud come. We will miss u,” Kejriwal promptly responded by tweeting.
“We will meet next time in Delhi,” Mamata later responded.

Mamata had put her weight behind Kejriwal, who had called her up for “advice” during bitter stand-off with Lt Governor Najeeb Jung over powers.
