A former cashier of the West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) has been booked on charges of embezzling over Rs 24 lakh during his tenure.
An audit in March last year had exposed the fraud, after which a complaint was lodged at Salt Lake (North) police station. The accused has been identified as Dilip Chandra Hawlader (52), a resident of Anandapur. He was nabbed by the Bidhannagar police on Wednesday under section 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to police sources, Hawlader had been barred from attending office in March this year, when his role in the fraud came to light.
“He has been accused of embezzling funds as a public servant. Investigation is on,” said Deputy Commissioner (detective department) of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate Santosh Pandey.
