Flames at Gangasagar under constant watch,courtesy CM order

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on late Saturday evening visited Babughat near Kolkata where the sadhus have gathered to take part in the Gangasagar Mela scheduled to conclude on Makar Sankranti.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on late Saturday evening visited Babughat near Kolkata where the sadhus have gathered to take part in the Gangasagar Mela scheduled to conclude on Makar Sankranti.

While reviewing the arrangements for the mela,Banerjee directed the officials to give special attention on the flames of sacrificial pyres as any negligence could lead to a fire tragedy.

“The chief minister asked the officials to keep a check on these pyres to avoid any kind of mishap,” an official of public health engineering directorate said.

Most of these monks cook their own meal using firewood,which also poses a threat to the bamboo,plastic and tarpaulin structures. “We have not received any official notification. But if the order comes,we will take necessary action and feed these people,” an official said.

According to a Kolkata police constable,they had already receive orders from their higher-ups to keep an eye on these holy flames. “We are keeping vigil to avoid any untoward incident,especially fire-related ones,” the constable said.
