The BJP and Congress have decided to announce the candidates for the upcoming civic polls only at the last possible moment to avoid a large number of potential rebels in the state.
The last date to file nominations is August 5, while the polls will take place on August 17. The toughest fight is in Ajmer district where Congress state president Sachin Pilot, Union Minister Sanwarlal Jat and two ministers in Vasundhara Raje cabinet have their respective constituencies.
The BJP and Congress are apprehensive that those who do not get an opportunity to contest might become rebels and harm their campaign. To avoid such a situation, the parties have sent their state leaders to various districts. In BJP, candidates for majority of wards have been decided at the meetings of district core committee. On asked about potential rebels, BJP state president Ashok Parnami said: “There is no disorganisation in BJP. Everyone is like a family. Those who are loyal to BJP will never rebel against us, such a trend can be seen in Congress, not in BJP.”
Meanwhile, BJP had asked all the ticket hopefuls to fill a form which seeks details of candidates. Interestingly, they were also asked to fill the name of three of their competitors. The other information sought were whether any past experience in fighting election, joining date and the post held along with responsibilities handled. The Congress has also zeroed in on the candidates. The advice of previous MPs and MLAs was taken while going through the list. Congress state president Sachin Pilot finalized most names after a discussion with state office-bearers.
