A gangster, Anandpal Singh, escaped from police custody on Thursday after his accomplices fired at a vehicle carrying him to Ajmer from Nagaur.
Eight policemen were injured in the firing started by Singh’s accomplices at Gangwa village near Parbatsar in Nagaur.
Two other criminals also escaped along with Singh after the assailants, driving a Mahindra Bolero, came close to the police vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire using weapons like AK-47 rifles.
Local news channels quoted DGP Manoj Bhatt as saying that the guard accompanying Singh in the police van had been drugged, allowing Singh and other criminals to snatch his weapon.
