Both the BJP and Congress had delayed the announcement of candidates for the civic elections in the state till the last minute, fearing rebellion from those who were denied tickets. And a day after the nominations, the fears seem to have come true, as a large number of rebels have jumped into the fray and filed nominations as independent candidates, jeopardising the parties’ electoral strategy.

BJP being the ruling party in the state is facing the most problems from rebels and the state leadership is trying to convince them to back down. The elections are to be held on August 17 for the civic bodies. With August 8 being the last date to withdraw the nominations, the BJP is hopeful that the rebels will back down by then.

On Thursday, the BJP received the list of representatives who have filled nominations against the party’s official candidates. State BJP President Ashok Parnami called the Rajasthan party in-charge V Satish and requested him to resolve the issue. He also postponed his Ajmer tour until a solution for the problem was found. Parnami said that the BJP is a disciplined party and those who have filed nominations as independents are being approached by the senior party leaders.

However, those who do not withdraw their nomination will have to face disciplinary proceedings. According to sources, the distribution of tickets has left a lot of party workers unsatisfied. Majority of the tickets have been given to those whose names were suggested by the MLAs. The local leaders felt unsatisfied due to being ignored and filed their nominations as independent.

Compared to the BJP, the Congress is facing fewer rebels and has also stated to reach out to them. Committees formed on the instructions of Congress State President Sachin Pilot have started the process of convincing the rebels to back down. The party is also hoping to benefit from the rebellion in the BJP camp.

On Thursday, Pilot analysed the data given by district level committees. State Congress spokesperson Archana Sharma said that a separate committee had been formed, comprising of the senior leaders of all districts. The list of the candidates was finalised according to that committee’s recommendations.

Those who have rebelled and entered the fray as independent candidates are being requested to withdraw their nominations. Not doing so would result in their being ousted from the party. Meanwhile, as per the State Election Commission, elections for 129 civic bodies will be held on August 17. Of these, Ajmer is the biggest civic body.

Elections will be contested for the councillors of 3,351 wards. Police and administration have been asked to remain on alert and State Election Commissioner Ramlubhaya has given instructions that the code of conduct must be followed strictly.
