Fourth list of speakers announced for Jaipur Literary Fest

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, JLF is announcing ten speakers every week for ten weeks, every Tuesday, between October 18 and December 20.

The Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) on Tuesday announced its fourth list of ten speakers who will be appearing at the JLF scheduled for January next year. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, JLF is announcing ten speakers every week for ten weeks, every Tuesday, between October 18 and December 20.

Winner of the 2012 Bihari Puraskar for his Hindi novel Dhooni Tape Teer, and author of When Arrows Were Heated Up and Travels in the Adivasi World, Rajasthani author and poet Hari Ram Meena, an IPS officer, will return to JLF. It was Meena’s posting in the tribal and dacoit-marred areas which inspired him to write novels and poems.

Formerly, a professor of English and Head of English Department (HoD) at Government Women College, Srinagar, Neerja Mattoo, who has translated a collection of Kashmiri short stories under the title The Stranger Beside Me, will be in attendance at the JLF. Bangladeshi poet, activist and entrepreneur, Sadaf Saaz, also co-director and producer of the Dhaka Literature Festival, will also be in attendance. Another personality in attendance will be former US ambassador to India, Robert Blackwill, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Professor of Indian Cultures and Cinema at the School of Asian Studies, University of London, Rachel Dwyer’s PhD research was on the Gujarati lyrics of Dayaram (1777-1852) and her main research interest lies in Hindi cinema. She will also be attending the JLF.

Dambisa Moyo, a global economist and author who analyses the macroeconomy and international affairs and among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2009, will be attending the JLF, along with Lila Azam Zanganeh, who will mark her first appearance at JLF. Zanganeh has contributed to literary articles, interviews and essays to publications including The New York Times, Le Monde, and The Paris Review, and has taught Romance literature and cinema at Harvard University.

English writer and newspaper columnist A N Wilson will return to JLF. A prolific and varied writer, his works spans satire such as The Vicar of Sorrows, historical fiction including Gentleman in England, biography and historical nonfiction such as The Victorians, among several others.

Another eminent personality in attendance will be Hyeonseo Lee, a North Korean defector living in Seoul, whose recent memoir The Girl with Seven Names – A North Korean Defector’s Story, has been published in 18 languages and over 8 million people have viewed her TED Talk about her life in North Korea, her escape to China and struggle to bring her family to freedom.

Last, Vladimir Lucien, a writer from St. Lucia, whose poems and criticism have appeared in The Caribbean Review of Books, PN (Poetry Nation) Review, Wasafiri and Bim Magazine will also be in attendance among others.
