A father-son duo, both doctors by profession, were arrested in Udaipur after the latter’s wife committed suicide allegedly after being harassed by her husband and in-laws. The police booked the duo after the deceased’s family filed an FIR at the police station in Sukher.

Bharat Gadhvi and his son Himanshu are from Gujarat’s Porbandar district. While Bharat is working with the Gujarat government and is presently posted as the medical officer at the special jail in Porbandar, Himanshu worked at Gitanjali hospital in Jaipur.

The victim, Karnika, was employed at a store of home accessories, House of Things.

The couple had been living at Sukher in Udaipur after they got married in January.

“The father and son have been booked and arrested under sections 306 and 498 of the IPC. Further investigation is going on,” Udaipur SP Rajendra Prasad Goyal told The Indian Express.

“The duo are still in police custody. They have not been sent to judicial custody yet,” he added.

Meanwhile, Porbandar police said that a team of Udaipur police brought the father to Porbandar on Monday in connection with the ongoing investigation in the case.

In the FIR, Karnika’s parents accused her husband Himanshu and in-laws of mentally and physically harassing her.

The latest in this series of purported instances of harassment was when her in-laws called Karnika to Porbandar and allegedly had her undergo an invasive fertility test, the FIR said.

After she returned from Porbandar on June 1, she had been upset about the incident and had told her mother and younger sister about it.

The next day, her parents and sister went to her store with some food but they found out that she had not reported for work. So, they went to her apartment.

Finding it locked from inside and getting no response on knocking, they broke open the door and found Karnika hanging from the ceiling fan.

They rushed her to the city’s American hospital where she was declared brought dead.
