The Congress on Friday defended its national general secretary Gurudas Kamat, who was slammed by the BJP over his “insensitive” remarks against Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani.

Launching a fresh attack on Irani in the statement issued in Kamat’s defence, the state Congress said it was surprising that despite losing the Lok Sabha elections twice, Irani was given the post of HRD minister. It referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks at a public rally in Bihar recently where he had asked people if they liked watching saas-bahu sopas on TV and whether they wanted regular power supply to do that.

“So Kamat ji had said that Modi ji must have been impressed by one such character played by Smriti Irani and that is why he gave her a portfolio for which she does not have the minimum qualifications, especially overlooking the fact that she had protested against him when he was the Gujarat chief minister,” state Congress spokesperson Archana Sharma said.

She added that Kamat was only reiterating what many BJP leaders had said on previous occasions.

The statement further claimed that Congress leaders firmly believed in the dignity of labour and hard work and that Kamat was quoted out of context over his remarks about Irani “cleaning tables at McDonalds”.

“No one objects to a person working hard, contesting an election and becoming a MP or a minister. But what needs to be understood is that there remain legitimate questions about a poorly educated person heading the HRD ministry, which regulates all premier institutes in the country,” Sharma said.

“And these questions were not raised by Congress leaders out of the blue…Smriti Irani has herself called attention to her dubious educational qualifications by providing varying details in her two election affidavits,” she said.
