Three killed in separate accidents

Three persons were killed and three others injured in three separate accidents across the city. In the first incident,two 21-year-olds were killed in Anand Vihar in East Delhi when a speeding truck hit the Scooty they were travelling on.

Police said Payal Srivastava,one of the victims,was gifted the Scooty just hours before she met with the accident. Payal’s friend Dushyant Kumar was also killed. Police said the two were returning after performing a puja for the vehicle when the accident took place. In the second incident,Kapil,a businessman,was killed after his speeding Santro fell into a drain in Swaroop Nagar area of Northwest Delhi on Wednesday night.

In another incident,three persons were injured after an empty canter rammed them before falling off the Yamuna embankment on Thursday in East Delhi’s Pandav Nagar area. According to police,three rickshawpullers,identified as Naresh,Ramesh and Madhusudan were fast asleep on the footpath when the speeding truck coming from Karkardooma towards Faridabad hit them.

Dwarka court lawyers end strike

New Delhi: Lawyers at Dwarka district court on Thursday ended their four-day strike following an assurance from the Chief Minister that their demands will be considered. The lawyers were on strike protesting the government’s decision to redraw jurisdiction of Southwest district sub-division.

A dozen car batteries stolen from Welcome area

New Delhi: More than a dozen car batteries were stolen from outside Pocket B,DDA flats in East Delhi’s Welcome area on Wednesday night. The police have registered a case of theft after one Raman Parasher found that the battery of his Alto was missing and filed a complaint. “When my car didn’t start,I checked and found the battery missing. The thief broke open the bonnet and took out the battery. The batteries of 12 other cars parked in the area were also found to be stolen,” Prashar said.

Court hikes land acquisition compensation

New Delhi: A city court increased the rate of compensation awarded to a Delhi villager for the acquisition of his land by the Centre,after observing that the High Court had hiked the compensation awarded to another land owner in the same village. The court,observing that the compensation awarded to petitioner Same Singh,whose land had been acquired by the government by a notification issued on 17 June 2005,was “inadequate and unreasonable”,enhanced the compensation awarded at the rate of Rs 15.70 lakh per acre by the Land Acquisition Collector (LAC) to Rs 23.93 lakh per acre.
