
The driver of a tempo traveller ferrying school children was killed after the vehicle hit a footpath as he tried to avoid a collision with a motorcyclist, said police, adding that the students sustained minor injuries. According to police, the incident took place in central Delhi’s Patel Nagar area Monday.
Police said the deceased has been identified as Sonu. “The incident occurred at 11.25 am when the driver was ferrying school children of the Faith Academy School, situated in Prasad Nagar. The driver was heading towards Shadipur depot when a speeding motorcyclist tried to overtake him.
Eyewitnesses told police that the driver braked immediately to avoid a collision but lost control of the vehicle and hit the footpath. “Due to the impact, the vehicle overturned and Sonu was thrown out. He suffered injuries to his head and was bleeding profusely,” said the officer said, adding that the students began shouting for help.
Passersby rushed towards the tempo traveller and tried to open the door to rescue the children. Some of them made a PCR call. Police took the driver to Deen Dayal Upadhayay Hospital where he was declared dead.

Police informed the school who in turn informed the parents of all the children. “Several students suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were discharged after first-aid. A case has been registered at Patel Nagar police station and police has begun questioning eyewitnesses present at the spot,” said the officer.
