To evade deportation from India, a Nigerian national walked out of a hearing at the country’s embassy in Chanakyapuri and then held the wife of a policeman hostage in Hauz Khas area. However, the 57-year-old policeman was able to rescue his wife and nab the fugitive with the help of some passersby.
Confirming the crime committed by the illegal guest, identified as Staniley, DCP (South) Prem Nath said on Tuesday, “We have arrested the accused and a case has been registered against him at Hauz Khas police station.”
The drama, police said, took place on April 15 when assistant sub-inspector Virendra Singh and his wife were returning from a lab in Yusuf Sarai after a medical test. “Staniley snatched the handbag from his wife and, for a while, held her hostage,” a senior police officer said.
Singh asked him to let his wife go. “Accused Staniley started abusing him and Singh pushed him away. The accused then escaped from the spot. Singh gave chase while his wife alerted passersby about the accused,” the officer said.
The Nigerian was nabbed after a 1.5-kilometre chase. On the basis of Singh’s complaint, a case under Section 393 (attempt to commit robbery) of the IPC was registered and the accused was arrested. Police probe involving the embassy then revealed that Staniley had been on the run for a while.
“Officials at the Nigerian embassy informed the investigators that Staniley was arrested from Agra for staying illegally in India after his visa expired. He had come to attend his hearing at the embassy as he was supposed to be deported back to his country. He escaped from the embassy premises and committed the crime,” the officer said.
