Top officials of the Delhi Public School Society are locked in a squabble over who actually leads the organisation. The vice-chairman of the DPS Society, MM Chopra, on Tuesday filed an FIR under sections 448 (trespass) and 34 of the IPC, alleging that another member of the society, Sharada Nayak, had “assumed charge” as chairperson without being appointed to the position.

The FIR, filed in the Amar Colony police station, states that “approximately 10 persons trespassed into the office of the chairman of DPS society, VK Shunglu, after breaking open the locks of his office.” It has also been alleged that the trespassers “forcibly occupied the office of the chairman and started issuing orders to the staff illegally”.

Nayak, former executive director of the United States Educational Foundation in India and a life members of the DPS Society, told Newsline, “On March 28, I moved a resolution through private circulation to dissolve the current working committee of the society. The resolution was passed unanimously and the current working committee stands dissolved.”

Explaining the reasons for moving the resolution, Nayak alleged financial irregularities in the society. “Several members have been asking the chairman to call a general body meeting to discuss the financial irregularities but he has refused to do so. That is why I moved the resolution in his absence and have assumed charge in the interim,” she said.

She admitted that a fresh election was not conducted to appoint her as the new chairperson.

Former Comptroller and Auditor General of India, VK Shunglu, who could not be reached for comments, led the society as chairperson until March 26, with Chopra as the society’s vice-chairman. With Shunglu travelling abroad, Chopra filed the FIR against Nayak.

Nayak argued that the case against her does not hold as the property that she is accused of “trespassing” belongs to the society and not any individual. “Any member can enter these premises. This does not amount to trespass,” she said.

Police said an investigation in the case is now on.
