Gurgaon medical student commits suicide

The girl left behind a suicide note in which she did not hold anyone responsible for her death.

A 22-year-old student of MDS (Masters of Dental Surgery) allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday evening by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her hostel room. The student, Payal Godara, was pursuing her final year of MDS from SGT Dental College in Chandu Budhera Village, Gurgaon. According to police, the girl, a resident of Sirsa, left behind a suicide note in which she did not hold anyone responsible for her death.

Police said the incident was reported around 4 pm on Wednesday.

“She hanged herself using a dupatta. When her roommates returned to the room, they found it locked. They pushed open the window and saw her body hanging. The students informed the hostel warden and management staff. In the suicide note she said she was under stress because of studies,” Sangeeta Kalia, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Gurgaon, said.

After the incident, over 100 students protested outside the college premises, demanding the resignation of principal Kamlesh Kohli and Head of Medicine Department Amardeep Singh.

“The girl was depressed because she was deliberately failed in a particular subject,” a second-year student alleged. Others claimed that the suicide note had been tampered with.

Prem Singh, the registrar of SGT University, denied the allegations. “It is wrong to say that the deceased was framed by the management and deliberately failed in one of the examinations. The evaluation of the answer sheets is not by the university. Our university is affiliated with Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, where the examination papers are evaluated. Therefore there is no question of singling out anyone,” Sharma said.
