The Jat quota agitation in Haryana was a recurring topic of discussion at the ‘Happening Haryana: Global Investors Summit’. While the inaugural session of the two-day event held at Hotel Leela Ambience, Gurgaon, saw speakers warn against the consequences such social unrest could have for investment in the state, delegates who took the podium at the valedictory session on the second day attempted to reassure investors by reiterating their faith in the people of Haryana.

“Recently, we had a fortnight of strikes in a state which was known to be peaceful by and large. It will not happen again,” said Rao Inderjit Singh, Minister of State for Defence.

“I say this on the basis of my experience, because I have my finger on the pulse of the people, that this thing will not be allowed to happen again. Not because of the government but because of the people themselves. It’s a no-sum game. Those who perpetuated the strike, those who suffered because of it, they are both losers. It is a question of cause and effect. It is a question of an action leading to a reaction. Nobody wants the reaction to go nuclear. This has happened, it has been nipped in the bud and I assure you that things will be peaceful in Haryana.”

Baba Ramdev, founder of Patanjali Yogpeeth, described Haryana as a “progressive and aggressive state”. He emphasised the need for good governance to ensure such violence did not occur again.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, chief of the Art of Living Foundation, also reiterated his faith in the people of the state, saying, “People are very resilient in Haryana… it has wisdom, it has the will to move forward. I have faith that Haryana will move forward with consciousness and enthusiasm.”
