Seldom does Priyanka Gandhi Vadra allow access to her life, her family or her thoughts. Yet at India Design ID 2015, NSIC Grounds, Okhla, there is room for the gaze, the occasional tilting of the head and the ah-ha moment as one stops to see her photographs. Showcased in public for the first time, Priyanka has given her photographs to K2 India, a multi-disciplinary design firm in Delhi, helmed by architect Sunita Kohli and her daughter architect Kohelika Kohli.
“Priyanka is an avid photographer and has been shooting since she was 12. Raihan, her son, too has taken after her. These photographs happened as part of a casual conversation. She culled photos from her vast collection and we sat down to curate the ones that are on display,” says Kohelika, CEO and Creative Director, K2 India.
Among the seven pigment prints, is a profile of a man, his face lit with light bulbs on either side.
Titled Stagehand, this 17×23 in frame was “taken at the Ramlila Grounds. This man is standing beneath the stage,” she says. Each of the photos carry a sliver of information, a rusted nailboard called Ocean Rust; the detail in distressed wood titled Boardwalk; and shadows of a cyclist, which focus on the feet and the tyres rather than the face, tell of how the reclusive photographer sees the world around her. Details don’t miss her eye.

“As an entry level photographer, Priyanka too will receive compliments and criticisms, and her frames are being sold from Rs 35,000 onwards. These prints are her first public display, some have already been sold,” says Kohelika.
This ‘Edition of 10’ sits amid custom-made chaise chairs, bookshelves and coffee tables, designed exclusively by K2 India. The exhibition, open until Sunday, attracts design enthusiasts from across the country, for a glimpse of made in India designs.
