A 19-year-old girl and her mother were allegedly beaten up by a local youth and his friends in central Delhi’s Anand Parbat after she resisted his attempts to molest her. The attack on the girl, a student of Delhi University, and her mother was captured by a CCTV camera outside their residence, installed by a cable company.
“They had been harassing me for at least a month. We had approached police several times but no action was taken. On Saturday, the youth, who lives nearby, tried to molest me. When I resisted, he started abusing me. When I called my mother for help, he hit both of us and then fled the scene,” the girl told The Indian Express.
After she informed police about the incident, the accused and his friends were detained. “We were assured by police that action will be taken against them. However, on Sunday, Sonu was released. He, along with his brother and friends, came to our house and started beating me and my mother,” said the girl.

She said the group comprised at least six men, who beat her and her 45-year-old mother with their fists and belts. “They fled after our neighbours, who heard our screams for help, intervened,” added the girl.
The girl’s father and brother were at work when the incident took place, said police.
Footage from the CCTV camera installed outside their house shows three of the six men beating up the two victims. All three have been arrested.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (central Delhi) Parmaditya told The Indian Express that when the girl and her mother first filed a complaint, they had immediately taken action and booked five persons under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC.
“But all of these are bailable offences, so they were released on bail the next day. Three men have been arrested for the attack on the women and they were booked under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide). They have been sent to judicial custody,” said Parmaditya.
The accused have been identified as Sonu, Govinda and Vinay, all residents of the area. Police are also looking for three other men who were also allegedly involved in the attack.
In August last year, 19-year-old Meenakshi had been stabbed to death, allegedly by two of her neighbours in Anand Parbat, after she resisted their attempts to molest her. The incident had triggered a political war of words and Delhi Police had faced severe criticism for their alleged inaction.
