It was a narrow escape for 70 children who got stuck in a school bus that was trapped in the waterlogged Pul Prahladpur underpass in southeast Delhi Wednesday morning. Police and fire department personnel brought the children to safety. Bystanders started assisting after police and the fire department personnel came to the aid of the children in the stranded bus, said sources.

Three buses were taking the underpass around 9.30 am when the last vehicle had an engine breakdown due to the waterlogging, said a source. The children, many of them around 10 years old or less, were on the way to attend a programme in Noida, the source added. Eyewitnesses said the water level was rising rapidly at the time. The driver, after failing to start the bus, asked the teachers to help him take the children to the roof of the vehicle.

Meenakshi Jetley, academic coordinator of school, who was in the bus Wednesday, said, “People were standing around and the water level was rising. We could see them but nobody was coming forward to help. We made a PCR call and also informed the fire department. The officials from both the departments acted swiftly and reached within a few minutes.”

Within a few seconds, half of the bus was under water. “One by one, our children were rescued. People also made a human chain to help the children,” said Jetley. “I am thankful to the policemen, firemen and all the people, including rickshaw pullers and passersby, who came forward to help the children.”

Jetley added that the government should think about this because it might be disastrous if people do not come forward to help in such situations. “Thousands of vehicles pass through the underpass daily. What if some incident were to take place? Who will take responsibility?”

Head Constable, Murari Lal, posted with the PCR, who reached the spot, told The Indian Express that he had to swim to reach the children.

“I swam for a few metres and reached the children. They were sitting on the rooftop of the bus. One by one, I carried them out on my shoulder,” said Lal. He added there was a drain that was overflowing and the water had become dirty.
