Delhi Police increase vigil around LSR after students complain of ‘indecent exposure’

These lanes — some of which house PGs and connect the college with the Moolchand Metro station — are usually dark and deserted because of inadequate lighting, they said.

AFTER SEVERAL students of Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) complained of harassment by men who indulged in “indecent exposure” near the back gate of the college, police and college authorities are working on security measures to deal with the issue.

Apart from the college gate, students said the lanes around the college too are frequented by such men, with some even chasing after them while in the act. These lanes — some of which house PGs and connect the college with the Moolchand Metro station — are usually dark and deserted because of inadequate lighting, they said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Rajiv Ranjan said, “We are aware about the instances that occurred with the students of LSR college and appropriate legal action has been taken in all the matters. We have increased police patrolling in Amar Colony, especially near the college area and PGs where most students are staying.”

Rukshana Shroff, Students Welfare Advisor, told The Indian Express, “It is a matter of great concern to us. We are regularly in touch with the local police. We have also asked police to increase vigil in the neighbourhood.”

While students said such incidents did take place earlier, the frequency has increased in the last couple of months. Recently, a woman student had shared her experience on the Facebook page of Pinjratod – a group of students fighting against “sexist” hostel rules. She narrated how a man had entered her paying guest accommodation at Amar Colony and indulged in such acts. Despite drawing the attention of police to the matter, students said such incidents continue unabated.

A second-year student of Bachelors in Elementary Education said she had witnessed two such incidents in the last one month. “I had heard that such incidents take place from my friends but I didn’t really believe them. However, I witnessed two such incidents recently. “

A first-year student said more than one of her friends had witnessed such incidents in different lanes around the college.

“One of my friends comes from a small town and she was traumatised after she witnessed such an incident near the polytechnic hostel she stays in near the college. Such incidents make us question why colleges are not being able to provide hostels to its students, forcing us to stay in such areas,” she said.

Another student said it was strange to see “men with cars” indulging in such activities. “You normally don’t expect people from well-to-do families to be doing such things,” she said.

With several students reporting the matter to college authorities, the students’ union as well as the college administration held a meeting with the SHO of Amar Colony police station to discuss security measures.
