A day after the body of a 40-year-old woman was found inside a car in North Delhi’s Maurice Nagar, her businessman friend Naveen Uppal who was being questioned in the case was arrested on charge of murder, said police Wednesday.
Uppal, 30, had been detained Tuesday evening while driving around in the car with the body of the woman, identified later as Anjali, said police. She was married to a businessman in Outer Delhi, police added.
“On Tuesday, he picked her up in his car at 4 pm. Later, he parked the car near Hindu College and during their conversation inside, an argument broke out following which he whipped out a country-made pistol and shot her. He was about to fire again but the bullet got stuck in the chamber,” said a police officer.
Uppal later called Anjali’s sister and told her she had shot herself and he was going to commit suicide too, said the officer. Anjali’s relatives informed police and the car was found. Uppal tried to mislead police during questioning, but later confessed to the crime, said the officer.
Meanwhile, the Anjali’s husband claimed Uppal had borrowed Rs 5 lakh from her over the years and they had demanded the money back. “I think this is the reason for the killing,” he said. Uppal, a resident of Tri Nagar has a shoe factory in Outer Delhi and got married recently, said police sources.
