Delhi: Man murdered, wife arrested as phone gives lead

Police identified the accused woman as Sapna from Chawala in southwest Delhi. Her accomplices, Vicky and Vikas, are on the run, said police.

A 25-year-old woman who allegedly conspired with two men to get her husband murdered was arrested Tuesday, said police. Unknown to her, the auto call record feature on her smartphone was on and had captured discussions she had with her accomplices and this provided vital leads, police added.

“Incidentally, this was her brother-in-law’s phone. He had given her his smartphone recently and taken her basic phone because it consumed less battery,” said a police officer. “On scanning the call recordings on her phone, it was found that she had asked one of her accomplices why they had attacked her husband mercilessly and set him on fire instead of killing him swiftly,” the officer added.

Police identified the accused woman as Sapna from Chawala in southwest Delhi. Her accomplices, Vicky and Vikas, are on the run, said police. Surender Kumar, DCP (southwest), said Wednesday, “We have arrested the victim’s wife and a search is on to nab the two men.”

Vicky and Vikas allegedly took Sapna’s husband Rakesh Kumar, a person with mental health issues, to an isolated place in Kanjhawala on July 11 and hit him with stones before setting him on fire, said a police officer. “They thought Kumar was dead and left the place. Kumar, however, was alive and managed to reach the main road, where he was spotted by police and taken to hospital. Later, he was referred to RML Hospital. His family members, including his wife, were informed,” the officer added.

“After seeing Kumar, his wife claimed before police there was a possibility he had tried to commit suicide because he was suffering from depression over not getting a job. Kumar died in the hospital on July 17,” said the officer. His family members later told police they suspected some conspiracy behind his death.

During investigation, police found from Sapna’s call detail records that she was constantly in touch with Vicky and Vikas, said the officer. “Kumar’s younger brother told police about having given his smartphone to her and police detected the auto call recording feature was switched on. On scrutiny, police came across the conversations between Sapna and Vicky,” the officer added. “Sapna told police she had asked her husband to go with Vicky and Vikas for a job interview,” said the officer.
