Delhi HC blast: Court orders medical examination of accused

Accused suffered partial paralysis of facial muscles

The special National Investigating Agency court has directed the Tihar jail officials to medically examine Delhi High Court blast accused Wasim Akram Malik at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), to ascertain cause of partial paralysis of his facial muscles during judicial custody.

This comes after Malik’s counsel raised suspicion of swelling due to injuries.

District and Sessions Judge Amar Nath on Tuesday directed the Tihar superintendent to get 26-year-old Malik examined by a specialist doctor at AIIMS and have a report sent on Thursday.

The direction came after Malik’s counsel moved an application seeking directions to the jail authority to provide “immediate medical aid” to him, after he was found to have developed swelling on the right side of his face.

The counsel also submitted to the court that they “suspect” he sustained injuries due to which the face had swollen, after which the court directed jail authorities to submit a report.

“The defence counsel states that she suspects that the inmate must have received some injuries on the right side of his face and has been showing swelling. She further states that the inmate may be examined forthwith… AIIMS hospital to ascertain the cause of injury and thereafter, to provide proper treatment,” the special judge observed.

”Superintendent, Tihar Jail is directed to get inmate Wasim Akram Malik examined by a specialist doctor at AIIMS and send the report within three days. The defence counsel is also allowed to meet the inmate in the jail premises as per rules,” the court directed.

Meanwhile, Tihar jail officials submitted to the court that Malik is being followed up at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and was being treated for “right side Bell’s Palsy” (heaviness in right side of the face).

Malik’s father Riaz Ul Hasan, told The Indian Express, “We came to know about paralysis five days ago. He is young and there is not reason to believe this is a normal swelling. We suspect he received injuries inside the jail. Only the medical authorities can say how and why this happened.”
