It was around 4 pm when two policemen holding two children, aged four and seven, arrived at the CRPF quarters in south Delhi’s Pushp Vihar.

The policemen, from Jamia Nagar police station, were looking for the home of CRPF constable Raj Kumar who, along with his wife and daughter, had died in a road accident in southeast Delhi earlier on Tuesday.

Kumar, his wife and their three children were travelling on a motorcycle when a dumper truck hit them from behind. Only two children survived.

What Else is Making News

“Initially, we only had an address in Madangir, where the children said they stayed. We started our investigation after calling the beat staff. They started making door-to-door inquiries. We also recovered the cellphone of the victim, which was lying a few metres from the accident spot. Later, we made several calls from the victim’s cellphone and traced his house,” said a police officer.

At the colony where Kumar stayed, Digvijay Rai, a CRPF constable responsible for security, looked at the children with the policeman, but did not understand what had happened.

“It came as a shock. The children did not seem to understand the situation. Two days earlier, we had seen them with their parents in the locality,” said Rai.

He said Kumar and his family had arrived at the CRPF quarters on November 30. Before this, they stayed in a rented apartment elsewhere.

“There are only a few times during CRPF tenure when one gets the facility of a government flat in the city. He could not even make full use of that,” said Rai.

According to police, Kumar, his wife Seema and daughter Ritu died in Kalindi Kunj after a dumper, which may have been speeding, hit their motorcycle from behind. The incident took place at 1.30 pm. Two children, Avinash and Surya, survived. Only Kumar was wearing a helmet, police said.

Kumar’s neighbour said that a week ago, the family had celebrated Ritu’s tenth birthday. “Everyone was very happy and they seemed to be settling in,” Usha Sharma, Kumar’s neighbour, said.

According to police, the dumper truck’s driver, Rambeer, couldn’t manage to slow down his vehicle in time. Police said he was beaten up by a crowd at the spot and sustained injuries. He has been admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre, and is said to be out of danger.

According to a CRPF official, Kumar and his family were returning from Kirpalpur village in Aligarh, where he had gone two days ago for his brother’s engagement.
