Punjab is the second state after Maharashtra to be crippled by arthritis,said doctors in this field.
In Punjab,we conduct over 2,500 knee surgeries every year which is second after Maharashtra, said Dr Harsimran Singh,a pioneer in the field of joint replacement. Around 4000 arthritis surgeries are conducted every year in Maharashtra he said.
Singh said there was little understanding of the crippling disease. Even though the number people affected by the disease is huge,there is no corresponding effort to tackle this illness, he said,adding that around 20 per cent of the world population is affected with the disease and is one among the leading causes of the disability.
Singh,who had done the highest number of computer navigated knee replacement in north India and had successfully performed hip replacement surgery of a 103-year-old woman,said the primary causes of arthritis is increase in weight,obesity and lack of exercise.

Reduction in body weight is cardinal in prevention of the disease. And a healthy balanced diet is must to maintain ideal body weight. A daily walk for 45 minutes delays the progression of the disease, he said. One should also do exercises at home to prevent arthritis.
Singh said the notion that arthritis is completely an old persons disease is not true. There are cases where young people have been affected by this disease,so one has to take care of himself by way of healthy diet and routine exercise, he said.
