UT Admn gives awards without any guidelines or criteria

The most sought after award in the field of education-Lifetime Achievement Award- not only lacks any guideline or criteria for the selection of nominations but also has been arm-twisted to please a few. It was introduced to honour only one official of the UT Education Department but later the nnumber was increased to two. Also,it is to be noted that there is no criterion for the selection of teachers and principals from various schools. Similar is the case with other state awards for the department officials which are awarded without any criteria.

Two officials, who were awarded with this prestigious award this year- District Education Officer Chanchal Singh and Registrar Arjun Dev,were members of the selection panel and had recommended the names of recipients. Also, instead of giving away this award to a retired or retiring official, these two awardees had five and ten years of service remaining. This has not only raised doubts over the credibility and relevance of the award, but also raised questions over the selection process.

Director Public Instruction (Schools) P K Sharma when asked about the absence of any criteria, said,“There are no set criteria or benchmarks framed for this award. Overall performance of the candidate is accessed. Also, the number is not fixed,it can be increased or decreased. Nothing can be said on the framing of these in the future too. “

The District Education Officer Chanchal Singh and Registrar Arjun Dev were awarded with the lifetime achievement award at a function held on Sunday. DEO Chanchal Singh was also the member of the selection committee itself for the awards, the Registrar Arjun Dev was also officially asked to shortlist and recommend names of the staff for the awards. Along with them, other committee members included Director State Institute of Education Dr S S Dahiya,Principal Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 35 Raviraj Kaur,Principal Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 33 Surinder Singh, and Principal of Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School,Sector 21 Smriti Kanwar.
