Asserting that even palatial houses in the city had no parking space,Punjab Governor and UT Administrator,Shivraj V Patil today said the solution to the problem was to have underground parking. The solution to some extent was to go underground, Patil said while inaugurating the multilevel parking at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
He added that parks in the city could double up as underground parking lots. Its not possible to allow people to park their vehicles in the parks, meant for spending some relaxing moments. So,we can think of having the parking lots under the parks, Patil said.
The UT administrator further said that the width of the roads in Chandigarh added to the parking woes. The roads cannot be widened as there are buildings on either side. Moreover,it is just not feasible to have multi-storey roads like the ones in Tokyo . Even the setting up of over-bridges is not advisable in Chandigarh , he said.
Patil approved of the concept of underground multi-level parking at the High Court. Acting Chief Justice A K Goel appreciated the labour put in by the workers. Justice Rajive Bhalla said the parking with three levels had been built at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore in two-and-a-half-years. The new facility will be able to accommodate around 1000 vehicles.
