Tenders for the re-surfacing, extension and widening work of the runway and taxi tracks on the Chandigarh airfield have been floated for an estimated cost of around Rs 442 crore. The task of re-surfacing and extension of dispersal of runways and other related works is expected to be completed within 26 months from the date of awarding the tender. According to senior IAF officials, the runway on the airfield is expected to be closed on two occasions for 15 days each when the re-surfacing work is in progress – firstly, when stress absorbing membrane interlayer is being laid and secondly, for the laying of dense asphaltic concrete.

These two occasions when the runway will be closed will not be a concurrent period so that the flying operations of the air force and domestic and international flight operations of the Chandigarh airport are not disrupted for a long period of time.
During these two 15-day periods, the military aviation flights will be diverted to another airfield nearby, while the civilian flights will not be able to operate from Chandigarh.
A team of senior IAF officials from the Maintenance Command and Western Air Command is expected to reach the Chandigarh air force station on Thursday to discuss the runway re-surfacing with local authorities.
Representatives of the companies who are likely to bid for the tender are also learnt to have been asked to be present for the deliberations, said a senior IAF official.
The entire work on the runway will be completed in five different phases and the runway will be kept open for civilian and military aviation flights for the better part of the phases.
In Phase 1, the mobilisation and installation of the equipment of the company which will undertake the task shall take place and this will entail a period of four months. This includes construction of temporary godowns, labour camps at the site, setting up of technical laboratory, setting up temporary road, fence and others.
In the second phase, the re-surfacing, re-alignment and widening of the ‘A’ taxi track will take place along with the extension and re-surfacing of the main dispersal at Runway 11 end of the airfield.
The third and fourth phases will see similar activity being carried out for re-surfacing and widening of ‘B’ taxi track and construction of a dispersal along with re-surfacing the Runway 29 end of the airfield.
Widening, extension and re-surfacing of ‘taxi links’ and construction of a new taxi link will also take place during these phases, while the leftover work will be completed in the final phase.
