Senate polls: Third round of voting held,results tomorrow

The third round of Panjab University senate elections was held for the constituencies of professors,readers and lecturers on Monday.

The third round of Panjab University senate elections was held for the constituencies of professors,readers and lecturers on Monday.

A total of 12 candidates are contesting for four positions. In the arts department,Akshaya Kumar,S K Chadha and Karamjit Singh are contesting in the professors’ constituency while Dinesh Kumar,Pradeep Sharma and Kuljeet Brar are contesting from the readers’ constituency.

In the science department,Rupinder Tewari,S K Mehta and Sukesh Kumar are contesting for the professors’ category and Malkiat C Sidhu,Kamaljit Singh and Amit Chauhan are contesting for the readers’ constituency. The voting venue was the Law Auditorium at Panjab University along with three regional centres at Hoshiarpur,Ludhiana and Muktsar and a rural centre at Kauni.

The voter turnout was 196 amongst the professors and 432 amongst readers and lecturers.

Three of the total candidates,Karamjit Singh,Rupinder Tewari and Pradeep Sharma,are supported by the Ashok Goel group and other four,Akshaya Kumar,S K Mahta,Kuljeet Brar and Kamaljit Singh,are supported by the G K Chatrath group. The BJP is also supporting the two candidates,Dinesh Kumar and Sukesh Kumar. The rest two are Independent candidates.

Karamjit Singh,Kamaljit Singh and Rupinder Tewari are sitting senators,with Karamjit and Kamaljit contesting in 2008 from the same group when Goel and Chatrath groups hadn’t split. The results for Monday’s voting will be declared on September 19. The last phase of polling for senate elections will be held on September 23 for the posts of 15 graduates,eight principals and eight teachers of the colleges affiliated with the university.
